The Pyramid of Ligourio is an ancient structure located in Argolis, on the northern outskirts of the settlement of Ligourio and at the foothills of Mount Arachnaion.
Condition: Today only its foundation survives, as it has been largely destroyed and most of its materials were reused for the construction of other nearby buildings.
Dating: It is probably dated to the late Classical or early Hellenistic period.
Possible Uses:
Fort / Beacon tower (phryctoria): The traveler Pausanias mentioned it in the 2nd century AD, suggesting that it functioned as a small garrison post or fortification for military troops. Other scholars believe it may have served as a phryctoria (a beacon signaling station using fire signals).
Funerary monument: Modern researchers argue that it may have functioned as a collective tomb (polyandrion) for soldiers fallen in battle.
