The Bourtzi is a small fortified islet located at the entrance of the harbour of Nafplio and represents a characteristic example of Venetian military architecture. Its first fortification dates to the First Venetian occupation (1389–1540), when works were commissioned by the Venetian provveditore Pasqualigo and designed by the architect Antonio Gambello. The fortress was later modified in accordance with Renaissance defensive requirements and changes in military technology.

The castle subsequently passed under Ottoman control in 1715 and remained so until 1822, when it came under Greek authority. Over time, it served various functions, including a military stronghold, residential use, and later a hotel during the 20th century, hosting notable visitors. Today, the site is an important cultural landmark and a popular tourist attraction, accessible by boat from Nafplio harbour and occasionally used for cultural events and concerts.
