The Sacred Church of the Koimisi of the Theotokos [Dormition of the Virgin] in Plataniti

A few metres south east of the church of the Metamorphosi of the Sotir [Transfiguration of the Saviour], in the central square of the village, is the church of the Koimisi of the Theotokos. The church belongs to the cross-shaped type (variation A3). It has a three-sided apse, with slit windows to the east and entrances in the west, north and south sides. The masonry of the lower sections of the church consists of large worked dressed stones which give the monument an ancient-looking appearance. One of the stones has the inscription 'Apolloni / chri[st]a / kai / alype / chaire. / Apolloni'. [Hail Apollon, honest and free of suffering. To Apollon]. Built in to the bell tower—which is contemporary with the church and rises on the western side of the monument—are three pottery vessels (skyfia), which date from the 2nd half of the 17th century. The church is one of a group of churches of the same type that were built in Argolis at the end of the 17th century, during the time of the second Venetian occupation.
