The Monastery of Agios Merkourios in Ligourio

The Monastery of Agios Merkourios is located about 2.5km south of Ligorio, and was in operation until 1833. The only surviving buildings are the catholicon [cathedral church] and what little is left of the cells. The small, single-storied building north-west of the catholicon is a later addition.

The monastery's catholicon is a single-nave vaulted-roofed chapel with a semi-circular apse projecting to the east, and it is built of roughly hewn stone. The interior is decorated with murals from two different time periods, of which the later dates back to the first half of the 18th century.

Extensive restoration work was carried out on the catholicon between 1989-1991, as well as rescue preservation work on the murals, by the 5th Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities.
